The Last Week Of Summer
It seems too early for the sun to be as low as it is. From the vantage point of the kitchen window, yellow light slices through the trees at an angle reminiscent of near-dusk, but surely I've misjudged the time. I open the slider and step out onto the deck in bare feet. The air is humid against my skin, but there's a slight breeze rustling the leaves in the distance. For a moment, I pretend it will last forever - this moment; this summer - but I know better. Labor Day is just a few days away. The kids will go back to school; the air will get crisper; and the days will get shorter. This is the last week of summer.
